The Introduction of Mathematics Department

The predecessor of Mathematics Department is the mathematics subject in Xingyi Teachers’ School established in 1978. In 1988, it was promoted from Mathematics Subject to Mathematic Education Department (also known as Mathematics Department for short). From 2011, it began enrolling mathematic undergraduate students as Xingyi Branch of Guizhou Normal University, and educated six years of undergraduates. The Mathematics and Applied Mathematics was among the first batch of undergraduate courses established since 2009 when the University is approved by the National Ministry of Education to be the University for Bachelor Degree. Currently, there are two undergraduate majors (Normal and Statistics) and a mathematics education major of junior college students. After over 3 decades’ development, the Mathematics has been built into a major with rational teacher team, sophisticated teaching plan, effective teaching result and local nationality characteristics. It has formed an education system with compulsory courses and optional courses, senior education and middle as well as primary education reform and teacher training. Currently, there are 41 lecturers, 4 professors, including one specially employed professor, taking up 10% of total teachers, 12 associate professors, taking up 29% of total teachers, and 21 lecturers, taking up 51% of total teachers; meanwhile, there are 16 masters, taking up 39% of total teachers. Judged from the age group, there are 5 50-year old teachers, taking up 12% of total teachers, 12 40-50-year old teachers, taking up 29% of total teachers, 19 30-40-year old teachers, taking up 46% of total teachers, and 5 teachers below the age of 30, taking up 13% of total teachers. The teacher team has rational structure in which the middle age teachers are backbones while teaching research team has senior aged, middle aged and young aged teachers. Therefore, we have rational education structure, age group structure, academic degree structure and academic titles structure with vigor and energy. Teachers in the Mathematics Department have taken part in 5 provincial research projects, finished 2 university projects and hosted one municipal research project. Teachers in the department have published over 200 academic papers, of which 5 papers was published in core journals, published 4 books and have taken part in the edition for 3 textbooks. There are total 678 students in Mathematics Department, including 463 undergraduate students and 215 junior college students. In addition, the department has over 200 students of Correspondence course and Adult Self-study Test. The mathematics modeling contest and training for postgraduate entrance examination is the feature and strength of the Mathematics Department. There is one team won the second prize in national mathematics modeling contest and many teams won the first prize and second prize in provincial contests. The department aims to enhance practical high quality talents who develop morally, intellectually, physically and aesthetically with basic scientific theories, basic knowledge and methods, competence of applying mathematic knowledge and computer to solve practical mathematic issues, the ability to serve local development in grassroots, as well as the teaching talents for middle schools and vocational school, teaching researching talent and relevant managing talents. We plan to build the Mathematic Department into a new educational theory oriented and advanced department with reform to traditional education and extension to the maojor while insisting the principle of modification, innovation, investigation and stable development. We shall take the courage to practice, explore, research and develop as our spiritual driving force. The department has established Applied Mathematics Research Office, Basic Mathematics Research Office and Curriculum and Teaching Research Office, as well as a primary Mathematic Research Office. We have two Guizhou provincial key courses: the Mathematics Analysis and Higher Mathematics

 

In the curriculum configuration, we take Courses of Basic Mathematics and Applied Mathematics as the basic courses and have provided Mathematics Analysis, Higher Algebra, Analytic Geometry, Function of Complex Variable, Function of Real Variable, Modern Algebra, Higher Geometry, Differential Geometry, Mathematical Modeling, Mathematical Experiment, Fundamentals and Application of Computer, Mathematics Teaching for Middle School and Program Design as main courses.

 

The department has been focusing on Basic Mathematics and Applied Mathematics with consecutive teaching reform and teaching quality improvement. Therefore, we have cultivated a large number of undergraduate students and junior college students with high employment rate, sustainable development competence, excellent social reputation and profound social influence.
